Morehead-Cain Scholars make outstanding contributions in many different areas of University life, each according to his or her own talents and interests. For example, in the graduating classes 2006 and 2007 were the student body president, vice president, and secretary; the Undergraduate Honor Court executive vice chair; the Student Attorney General's chief of staff and managing associate; the Phi Beta Kappa secretary; seven members of the Order of the Golden Fleece honorary society, including its Jason and Chrystopher; nine members of the Order of the Bell Tower, including its director of current students; the editors of eight campus publications; the co-president of the Campus Y (the largest student organization on campus); the president of the Carolina Union; the president of the Black Student Movement; the president and vice president of the Sports Club Council; the vice president of APPLES Service-Learning Program; the vice president of the Order of Omega Greek Leadership Society; the executive director of Students for Students International (S4Si), a student-run non-profit organization that provides scholarships for students in Tanzania and Zimbabwe; and the co-founder and president of Socially Conscious Science. The graduating classes of 2006 and 2007 also produced four Fulbright Scholars, and three Rhodes Scholars. Currently, 189 Morehead-Cain Scholars are studying on campus and devoting their spare time to numerous campus activities and causes. Current Morehead-Cain Scholars include the student body president; the Student Attorney General's managing associate; the Undergraduate Honor Court vice chair; the Honor System outreach coordinator; the membership coordinator, outreach coordinator, and external treasurer for Campus Y; and the executive director for Students for Students International (S4Si); the co-chair of the UNC chapter of Habitat for Humanity; the co-founder of the Educational Organization to Award Scholarships to Children in Latin America; and the coordinator of Carolina Language Partnership (CLaP), a service organization that provides free English tutoring for new immigrants. When they have seen a need or had a special interest that was not represented among existing campus organizations, Morehead-Cain Scholars have often founded new ones. For instance, Morehead-Cain Scholars have established such thriving campus organizations as the Student Environmental Action Coalition (SEAC), now a national organization; the North Carolina Renaissance Program, which harnesses the wealth of resources at the University to provide opportunity and inspiration to gifted rural North Carolina high school students; the White Ribbon Campaign, which encourages men to speak out against sexual violence towards women; the North Carolina Center for Economic Empowerment, an advocacy group for Orange County residents that provides job training and placement; the Freshman Focus Council, which brings freshman issues to the Student Government and campus issues to the freshman class; the Big Sibs Organization, a peer mentoring program that helps first-year students become involved in the Carolina community; Students Teaching about Nutrition and Diabetes (STAND), a volunteer organization that educates youth about diabetes; and two organizations that benefit the North Carolina Children's Hospital: the UNC Dance Marathon, UNC's largest student-run fundraiser that provides financial assistance for the families of patients at the North Carolina Children's Hospital; and the Carolina Dreams Program, a community service program that pairs student-athletes with North Carolina Children's Hospital patients to attend UNC sporting events. |
