Counselor Instructions

General Guidelines:

  • The Morehead-Cain targets well-rounded, dynamic young leaders; it is not purely an academic scholarship.
  • The Morehead-Cain is based soley on merit, financial need is not considered.
  • Morehead-Cain nominees and applicants must apply separately for admission to UNC-Chapel Hill. For more information see www.admissions.unc.edu or call 919-966-3621.

The Morehead-Cain Foundation accepts student applications from a number of different sources. Depending on how your student came to be involved in the Morehead-Cain selection process, you will be asked to provide supplemental materials to support his or her application.

Please identify the kind of student you are working with from the choices below, and follow the related instructions.

OPTION ONE — North Carolina School Nominee or Direct Applicant

The student is a senior at a secondary school in North Carolina and was nominated by your school's Morehead-Cain Nominating Committee or is applying directly for the scholarship.

What you should do:

STEP 1 - Identify potential nominees:

  • Ask faculty members to fill out a "Candidate Suggestion Form." (For school use only. Please do not mail to the Morehead-Cain Foundation.)

STEP 2 - Collect information about potential nominees:

STEP 3 - Select nominees:

  • Determine the number of official school nominees you may select:

  • Convene a school nominating committee to review each candidate's "Preliminary Information Form" and academic record. The committee should nominate students who best meet the selection criteria for the Morehead-Cain, regardless of their interest in attending UNC-Chapel Hill.
  • The committee's selections must be endorsed by the principal or head of school.

STEP 4 - Encourage other qualified students to apply:

  • Students who feel they meet the qualifications for the Morehead-Cain may complete an application as a direct applicant after consulting with their college counselor.

STEP 5 - Refer applicants to the Student Application: (Deadline for submission is October 5.):

  • Please remind students that we will NOT accept any additional pages from them. They should not send extra essay pages, recommendations, or other self-promotional material.

STEP 6 - Supplemental Materials:

A. School Report (Deadline to submit the School Report is October 5.)

The School Report form will also be submitted online this year. The student will be required to supply their counselor's name and e-mail through the online application. Once this information has been submitted a School Report form will automatically be e-mailed to the specific Counselor. Counselors should follow the instructions they receive through e-mail and fill out the School Report to submit it electronically.

B. Transcript (Postmark deadline is October 5.)

Transcripts are the ONLY supplementary material that will be accepted in hard copy format. You can either:

1. Fax your transcript via our secure and toll-free electronic fax number: 1-866-393-6704. Our electronic fax automatically converts the transcript into a PDF file.

OR

2. Mail your transcript (mailed transcripts MUST be postmarked by October 5) to the following address:

C. School Recommendation (Deadline to submit the recommendation is October 5.)

All recommendations will be submitted online this year. Students will download a PDF document that they will physically hand to their recommender. The document has instructions on how to submit a letter of recommendation online.


OPTION TWO — Out-of-state School Nominee

The student is a senior at a school outside of North Carolina that is eligible to nominate for the Morehead-Cain (see our list of eligible schools) and has been nominated by your school's Morehead-Cain Nominating Committee.

What you should do:

STEP 1 - Identify potential nominees:

  • Ask faculty members to fill out a "Candidate Suggestion Form." (For school use only. Please do not mail to the Morehead-Cain Foundation.)

OPTION THREE — Affiliate Program Nominee

The student participated in one of the Morehead-Cain Foundation's nominating affiliate programs and has been personally notified by the Morehead-Cain Foundation that he or she is eligible for consideration. Affiliate programs include School Year Abroad, The Mountain School, and Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership World Leadership Congress.

Supplemental Materials

A. School Report (Deadline to submit the School Report is October 5.)

The School Report form will be submitted online this year. The student will be required to supply their counselor's name and e-mail through the online application. Once this information has been submitted a School Report form will automatically be e-mailed to the specific Counselor. Counselors should follow the instructions they receive through e-mail and fill out the School Report to submit it electronically.

Students who are applying through School Year Abroad (SYA) or The Mountain School have been informed that a faculty member of SYA or The Mountain School (and not a school official from their home high school) must complete their recommendation.

If a student is applying through Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership World Leadership Congress, their recommendation must come from a school official at their home high school. The student will download a PDF document that they will physically hand to their recommender. The document has instructions on how to submit a letter of recommendation online.


OPTION FOUR — British School Nominee

The student attends secondary school in the United Kingdom.

OPTION FIVE — UNC-Chapel Hill Admissions Nominee

The student applied to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by the November 1 deadline and has been personally invited by the Morehead-Cain Foundation to participate in the Morehead-Cain nomination process.

A. School Report (Deadline to submit the School Report is January 21.)

The School Report form will also be submitted online this year. The student will be required to supply their counselor's name and e-mail through the online application. Once this information has been submitted a School Report form will automatically be e-mailed to the specific Counselor. Counselors should follow the instructions they receive through e-mail and fill out the School Report to submit it electronically.

B. Transcript (Postmark deadline is January 21.)
